Working with forage machines. What should you pay attention to in the tractor?

Power take-off, hydraulic system, rear and front three-point lifting system, transmission - these are, among others, in these subassemblies that we find functions that may prove useful when working with forage machines.

When harvesting forage from grasslands, a number of machines aggregated with a tractor are used. These include: mowers, tedders, rakes, balers, trailers. These machines can be mounted, towed, side, front and large-size.

Power take-off (PTO)

Machines require different speeds, this could be 540 or 1000 rpm. The tractor should have a PTO speed suitable for the accompanying machine. It is ideal for lighter work, such as raking, if the tractor has economical PTO speeds. This allows you to work at a lower engine speed, which results in lower fuel consumption and greater comfort of work (by reducing noise).

- You should also pay attention to the available PTO speeds if you plan to purchase a front mower. This combination always requires operating at normal speeds, as the front PTO does not have economic speeds. When aggregating, it is worth checking whether the PTO pin on the tractor side can be turned freely by hand and whether it is possible to replace it with another pin, if the number of splines is not correct, says Emil Kaźmierczak from Claas Polska.

When working with the machine suspended and driven by the PTO, it may be necessary to disengage the shaft while lifting the machine. In the case of Claas tractors, a very useful function will be the automatic roller in relation to the height of the rear linkage. It is worth noting that the PTO automation, despite the similar name, may work differently depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, it is worth checking whether such a mechanism will meet our expectations, whether it turns off and on automatically, and whether it has a programmable activation height.

When working with the roller, it is advisable to keep the engine speed constant so that the machine works stably. Engine speed memories will also be useful. With one button we can turn off or turn on the desired engine speed and thus PTO speed.

Hydraulic system

The right number of hydraulic couplings and electrical sockets is essential in all machines. Some of them may require up to four pairs. You should also pay attention to the function of the hydraulic valves. Why?

- The hydraulic valves may differ from each other, not only in the connection ends. With the valve function in mind, check that it has a floating position - on Claas tractors, it is marked with a wave. This is a position where both sockets are connected to each other and allow free movement of the actuator due to the forces acting on it - explains Emil Kaźmierczak.

Telescopic loaders technical data

This is very important if the forage machines are lifted and positioned on the same cylinder. Without floating position, they will not follow the terrain. In addition, it is worth having the machine "kick-out".

- With our tractors, you do not need to hold the hydraulic valve lever when lifting the rake rotors. Simply activate it, and after reaching the end position, the lever automatically returns to the middle position. If machine parts move too fast, and the belt in the trailer is controlled directly from the hydraulic socket, the hydraulic flow adjustment function will be helpful, or even necessary - adds the expert.

Another aspect is the pump output, which has a direct impact, for example, on the speed of opening the hatch of the baler. If the opening is too slow, we can use the option of connecting the oil flow. When using electronically controlled hydraulic valves and working with a set of mowers, the headland management system will be very useful. It allows you to lift the rear and front mowers in the same place with one button. Such a system will be accurate at different speeds, if the successive steps that the tractor is to perform for us are separated by the traveled, programmed distance.

It is also worth mentioning the increasingly popular Power Beyond system. In short, it is that the machine itself decides how much oil it needs. Thanks to this solution, fuel consumption is reduced, because the hydraulic pump works only when the oil flow is needed.

Rear and front three point lifting systems

The rear and front linkage (three-point linkage) can be controlled mechanically or electronically. In terms of construction, attention should be paid to appropriately sized handles in the arms.

- The sizes of the elements are standardized, e.g. category 2 in each machine should have the same size - says Emil Kaźmierczak.

In addition to the basic equipment, it is worth taking a look at the details. One of them is the possibility of two-sided adjustment of the hanger height, e.g. in order to level the mower. Another is hand stabilizers.
